How Custom Sheet Metal Parts Are Priced: The Real Cost Drivers

A transparent breakdown of what determines the price of custom sheet metal work, and how design choices move the number up or down.

How Custom Sheet Metal Parts Are Priced: The Real Cost Drivers

Quotations for custom sheet metal parts often look inconsistent between suppliers. In reality, the price is built from a small number of measurable drivers. Understanding them helps buyers compare quotes fairly and reduce cost through design.

Material

Material usually represents 30-50 percent of the total. Grade, thickness and sheet size all matter, and nesting efficiency determines how much of the purchased sheet ends up in the finished part. Parts that can be nested tightly, or that share a common blank size with other orders, cost less per piece.

Machine Time

Laser cutting time scales with cut length and thickness. Bending time scales with the number of bends and the handling difficulty of the part. A design with twelve bends in a small envelope can cost more to form than a larger part with four simple bends.

Secondary Operations

  • Welding, grinding and weld finishing
  • Insert installation such as PEM nuts and studs
  • Surface treatment: powder coating, anodizing, passivation
  • Assembly, labeling and protective packaging

Each added operation brings its own setup and handling cost, which is disproportionately heavy on small batches.

Quantity Effects

Setup costs are fixed per job, so unit price drops sharply between 1 and 10 pieces, more gradually between 10 and 100, and only modestly beyond that unless dedicated tooling is justified.

How to Reduce Cost Through Design

  • Use one material thickness across the assembly where possible
  • Keep bend radii uniform to avoid tool changes
  • Relax tolerances on non-functional dimensions
  • Replace welded sub-assemblies with single formed parts where strength allows
  • Combine several parts into one order to share setup and freight
